Sucker Punch (2011)

Yup, what more can I say, hot girls + sword + guns + robots + samurai + zombies + dragons + steam punk machines + big a** explosions = Sucker Punch. Watching this seems like watching an otaku's wet dream, pardon me if I'm wrong.

Zack Snyder had brought us 300 (2007), the visually stunning movie that brought graphic novel movie adaptation to a whole new level. Now, teaming with Steve Shibuya who co-wrote with him, gave us a punch in the eye with their new film, Sucker Punch, that filled (again) with artsy visuals that blows me away (literally).

What intrigues me is that critics seems to hate this film (based on reviews given in Rotten Tomatoes), whereas I find that this film is actually good (actually I expect this movie to be meaningless, I just want to watch it because I want to see its overblown visual effects). Well, in my point of view, underneath all that over the top effects, heavy make up and the scantily clad clothing that those girls wore, this film actually has a deeper meaning, for those who missed those important points that the film try to convey (perhaps it doesn't convey anything and all that "deep meanings" are just my imagination, well who knows), you are so at loss.

Let me give a simple synopsis of Sucker Punch. The plot is quite simple. It is about a girl who has been sent to a mental hospital because of a deed that was not her intent at all. While being in that mental hospital, she befriends with other four girls known simply as Amber, Sweet Pea, Blondie and Rocket and she also receives a nick name, Baby Doll. Baby Doll plans to escape the asylum and the other 4 girls also want to follow her. So, she concocts a plan to escape. In order to escape she has to collect several items to be used in her escape plan. During the process of obtaining those items, she imagines an alternate world where she has to fight with samurai, zombies, robots and dragon, whereas in reality she is fighting with the authorities in the asylum ... Thats it, I don't want to spoil the ending. Does she manage to escape? does she manage to gain her happiness, is her alternate world is real? You have to watch it to find the answer.

My special review of Sucker Punch :
In my opinion, this movie is really disturbing as it is more than meets the eye. Below the surface it conveys a hidden reality of the girls life. The hospital where the girls stayed is actually a mental hospital/brothel (The brothel part is also in the girls imagination, but I believe that the sexploitation is real) as those girls clearly being exploited to fulfill sexual pleasures of the hospital authorities or perhaps people from outside also involve.

In reality Madam Gorski is a psychiatrist who treats those girls but in their imagination, Madam Gorski is the one who trains these girls to perform in her "theater" and also encouraged them to use their imagination to escape from reality. This can be proved by her quotes such as "What you are imagining right now? That place can be as real as anything" and "What you are imagining right now. You control this world". So, if you view her words in a new light it is quite disturbing as the girls have to escape their harsh reality by going deep into their imaginations. So in their imaginations they are in an alternate world but in reality they are "dancing" or "pleasing" their customers. hmmmm quite disturbing.

Baby doll as the name suggested looked like a little girl although she is 20 and she seems to be manipulated like a doll to fulfill certain peoples' pleasure. The character is tragic because the way she reacted when she sees her stepfather, she clearly is scared and loathe him as if he had abused her. Furthermore the way she "dance" and her extreme "imaginations" really showed that she is already a tortured soul. As she said "I lost everyone I loved. And then they locked me away. With no where to hide from the pain". To Baby Doll, reality is a prison, so she retreats into her imagination for escapism, but is she really free?. The thing that she wants the most is freedom, I guess in the end of the movie she really gets her own "freedom".

This movie is full of hints of what is going on in Hollywood. Well, I guess I read too much of Vigilant Citizen's blog, so that is why I came out with this crazy idea, but who knows, the truth is out there, it is up to you to believe it or not.

Bonus : Sucker Punch memorable quotes spoken by the "wise man"

quote 1 "If you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything"

quote 2 "Your mind can set you free. To reach your own paradise just let go

quote 3 "Don’t write any checks with your mouths that your ass can’t cover… And
don’t wake the dragon"

quote 4 "For those who fight for it, life has a flavor the sheltered will never
know"
